Your photographer is not what this replaces
This is not a cheaper professional. It is a different thing entirely, and the distinction matters.
Let us be direct about this, because the misunderstanding is common enough to be worth a whole page: a shared guest gallery is not a substitute for a professional photographer, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something badly.
What you are paying a professional for
A good event photographer is not someone who owns a better camera than your guests. They are someone who has done this two hundred times and therefore knows what is about to happen before it happens. They are standing in the right place thirty seconds early. They know which way the light is going. They will ask the two of you to move four steps to the left, and the resulting photograph will be the one you frame.
They also produce a consistent body of work. Same colour treatment, same eye, edited and sequenced into something that reads as a single story. No collection of phone photographs from forty different devices, cameras and editing habits will ever do that. It is not supposed to.
What a professional structurally cannot do
One person occupies one position at a time. That is not a criticism, it is geometry. A photographer who is capturing your first dance beautifully is, at that exact moment, not in the corridor where your two oldest friends have found each other, not at the table where your grandmother is being told a story, and not outside where someone is crying for reasons that will be a great anecdote in five years.
They also have a contract with an end time. Coverage stops; the party does not. And they cannot photograph the view from your guests, which is the one angle on your event you will never otherwise see: what it looked like to be a person watching you.
The flavour argument
Here is the part people underrate. Your guests do not just have different positions, they have different taste. Your cousin who photographs nothing but hands. Your friend who only shoots from the hip and gets the composition wrong in a way that is somehow better. The relative who takes eleven nearly identical photos of the flowers because the flowers are the thing they cared about.
Each of those is a small revelation about the person who took it, as well as about your event. A professional gives you one coherent aesthetic, which is the point of hiring them. Your guests give you forty incoherent ones, which is a different pleasure. That deserves its own argument.
Hire the professional for the photographs you will print. Collect the guest photos for the ones you did not know existed.
If you are choosing between them, choose the professional
For a wedding, if the budget genuinely forces a choice, hire the photographer. A gallery full of phone photos is not a wedding album and you will regret the substitution. Treat collecting guest photos as an addition, not a saving. If it ever becomes the reason you skip the professional, somebody has mis-sold it to you.
The exception is the very large category of events where nobody was ever going to hire anyone: birthdays, showers, graduations, leaving drinks, most company events. There the guest photos are not a supplement to the record. They are the record, and the only question is whether anyone bothers to keep them.
Tell your photographer
Worth saying plainly: mention it to them. Plenty of professionals are relaxed about guests taking photos, and some will help you place the QR code well, but ask rather than assume. What they object to, reasonably, is a wall of phones held up during the ceremony blocking their shot. A collection does not require that, and it is worth telling guests so: put your phone down for the vows, pick it up for everything else.
